Variable Rule Editor dialog box

Defines the rules for a variable. You can define a discrete set of values, or a range of values for a variable with the Variable Rule Editor dialog box.

Note:

The Variable Rule Editor is unavailable if the dimension or dependent variables are unlocked.

Variable Name

Displays the name of the variable for which you are defining rules.

Current Value

Lists the current value of the variable.

Value based on:

Specifies whether the value is based on a formula you define or a pasted link.

For more information on using the Paste Link command to link a variable to a value in another document, see the Linking variables between parts in an assembly and Creating variables with a link to a spreadsheet sections in the Using Variables Help topic.

Formula

Defines the formula for the variable. You can define a formula using basic algebraic functions that relate the variable to other variables on the part, or use the Function button to display the Function Wizard to define more complex formulas. For more information, see the Using Variables Help topic.

Pasted link:

Specifies that you want to use a variable that you paste from another document to define the current variable.

Limit value to:

Specifies the limits you want to define for the variable.

Discrete list

Defines a discrete list of values that are valid for the variable. You must separate the values with a semicolon ( ; ). For example, you can specify that only the values 10, 20, 30, and 40 mm are valid for a variable.

Note:

When you define a discrete list of values for a variable that is a locked dimension, the list of values is also available in the input box on the Dimension command bar or in the Dimension Value Edit dialog box.

Min/max limit:

Defines a range of values that are valid for the variable. When you set this option, you can specify that the variable minimum and maximum values are between two values, greater than or greater than and equal to a value, less than or less than and equal to a value, or outside a range. The following examples illustrate possible uses for a min/max limit:

  • Example 1: Greater than or equal to 15 mm AND less than or equal to 30 mm. Valid values are within a defined range.

  • Example 2: Greater than or equal to 30 mm AND less than or equal to 15 mm. Valid values are outside of a defined range.

  • Example 3: None AND less than or equal to 30 mm. Valid values are within a defined range.
