Using Smart Codes

The Rich Application Client (RAC) in Teamcenter Express includes the capability of creating Smart Codes (part numbers derived from a user-defined hierarchical list of values) as the Item ID. You can preconfigure the label and contents of each section that makes up the Item ID resulting in uniformity in the Item IDs you use. You define the Smart Codes you want to use, the flow of the hierarchy, and make selections from a menu to construct the Item ID used by Solid Edge Embedded Client.

Note:

The use of Smart Codes requires Teamcenter Express 4.1.1. Smart Codes are implemented in the Rich Application Client (RAC) only and are not available in the web client. Refer to SEEC_Readme.htm for software compatibility details.

Enabling Smart Code creation

The use of Smart Codes is not enabled by default. The following workflow describes the process of enabling Smart Codes and then configuring them for use.

  1. Plan your Smart Code deployment.

  2. Enable Smart Codes using the Teamcenter preference TCX_Smart_Codes.

The Help topic, Enable Smart Codes, describes the process.

  3. Create a List of Values for each section of the Item ID.

The Help topic, Create a List of Values, describes how to use this Teamcenter feature.

  4. Define your Smart Code configuration.

A sample configuration file is located in TC_ROOT\install\tcx\data\EN\SmartCodes, and it defines the order, dependency, and label for each section of the Item ID. Edit the tcx_sc_config.txt configuration file as described in the Edit the Smart Code configuration file Help topic.

  5. Import the configuration file.

The Smart Code configuration file is imported and exported using the smartuibldr_configure utility. The utility is located in \TC_ROOT\bin on your Teamcenter server. When you import a file, the contents of your configuration file are written to the Teamcenter database. Use the instructions in the Help topic, Import and export the Smart Code configuration file, to import your configuration files into the database.

Once you enable Smart Codes, the Compose Item ID dialog box is displayed any time you create a new document or choose the Save As or Save Copy As commands in a Teamcenter managed environment of Solid Edge or Structure Editor.

Assigning values for multiple documents

When you create multiple new documents, each document is listed on a separate row of the New Document dialog box with the Item ID column displayed read-only. When you click Assign All you are prompted for each document in the list in succession for the assignment of an Item ID based on Smart Codes. With each document, the New Document dialog box updates and the Item ID of the current document highlights. As the next document is presented, the Compose Item ID dialog box is reset and you make your selections for the next document in the list. This process continues until an Item ID based on Smart Codes is assigned for each document or until you cancel the process.

Note:

Solid Edge Family of Parts implements a unique behavior when multiple documents are created concurrently. The Compose Item ID dialog box is pre-populated with your previous List of Value selections.
