Character curves help to define the aesthetics, flow, and overall shape of a surface when surface modeling. Character curves can be hard edges or soft edges. Hard edges are actual edges, while soft edges are view-dependent edges, such as when viewing a curved surface (A) from the side (B). Soft edges are also known as silhouette edges.
